We Make Dua for Everyone… So Why Not Iran?

Muslims make dua for Palestine, Sudan, Yemen… But when it comes to Iran — there is hesitation, silence, confusion.

Why No Dua?

Should we be making dua for Iran… or not? We make dua for Muslims in Palestine… Sudan… Yemen… So why not Iran? Be honest…When was the last time you heard a dua for them? Mosques, Imams, Scholars silent on Iran — or are they? Is it just me… or has there been an awkward, deafening silence? Something doesn’t add up. Muslims are suffering…But the Ummah feels… hesitant. So what’s behind this silence?

Awkward Questions We Must Ask

  1. We need to ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions:

  2. Are Muslims silent because Iran is Shia?

  3. Is it because Iran is also seen as an aggressor?

  4. Or are we genuinely confused on how to view this war?

  5. What does the Quran and Islam have to say about the situation?
    Let’s answer these questions.

US Zionist Aggression Against Iran

First some context – Who started the war? It was the U.S. Zionist militia that started yet another unprovoked war of aggression against Iran, that is after their previous 12-day attacks in June 2025. 34 days of U.S. imperial and Zionist bombardment of Iran, thousands of innocent people have been killed, including hundreds of school children. No authorisation under UN Charter, illegal under so-called ‘international law’, once again highlighting the sheer hypocrisy of the West. Aim is to destroy Iran’s strength entirely – not merely the regime, but all capacity for power – even if that leaves the country in civil war and chaos. Hence, Infrastructure, vital services like energy and water systems all bombed.

Beyond Iran, the ripple effects are global: rising fuel costs, food prices, economic strain — impacting ordinary households and people from the Middle East to Europe, from Pakistan to the Philippines. The entire world is suffering due to American and Zionist imperial war. This should be our first point we articulate.

The Shia Fear Factor

But let’s be honest - Is the biggest fear factor Iran is Shia? Is this the real reason why confusion has resulted in an awkward silence? The oldest schism which has historically been used to split the Muslim world?

Shia versus Sunni a tactic used to create fear, mistrust by Muslim politicians, leaders and non-Muslims alike, to keep the Ummah divided and achieve their political agendas? Yes, differences exist. Always will. No one is denying that. But the question is not whether differences exist. The question is: When Muslims are under attack… does Islam allow those differences to silence us?

Allah SWT says: “The believers are but brothers, so make reconciliation between your brothers…”

https://legacy.quran.com/49/10

We’re not identical brothers. Agreeing on everything. But still — brothers. So the real issue is not theology here — it’s whether sectarian thinking has paralysed our thinking, our action and response to injustice? Muslims must look beyond this sectarian divide and unite upon Islam.

History teaches us a very important lesson. Wasn’t it Fatimid Egypt – which was so central to the rise of Salahuddeen and ultimately the backbone to supporting the conquering of Jerusalem in 1187 by Salahuddeen Ayubi [RA]? (Given that it to no longer remained Fatimid after Salahuddeen Ayubi came into power)

Today, Iran has the same potential as once Fatimid Egypt had. Why can’t a genuine Iran once again not be the backbone to supporting a future liberation of Palestine and Al Aqsa?

If – And only if - we were able to unite the Muslim ummah without being fixated on sectarism.

Iran the Aggressor

Now let’s address the second argument — and it’s a serious one.

Many Muslims point to Iran’s role in:

  1. Syria — Support for brutal dictator.

  2. Hafez al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad.

  3. Iraq — influence over military factions.

  4. Yemen — backing of the Houthis

Killing Iranian civilians - Recently, the regime has faced severe accusations of attacking its own people during domestic unrest. Conflicts which have led to the massacre of hundreds of thousands. Politically – it is well known - Iran has long played a ‘double-game’ publicly condemning America, while privately co-operating, intelligence to Washington against the Taliban in Afghanistan and supported America in Iraq through its Iranian-backed militias.

So the question becomes: Why make dua for a state involved in such oppression? That concern is valid.

But here’s where we need clarity: Are we making dua for governments… or for people?

Because when bombs fall…they don’t ask about politics.

They hit homes. Families. Children.

And Allah SWT says:

“And what is wrong with you that you do not stand for the oppressed…”

https://legacy.quran.com/4/75

The معيار criterion here is oppression — not political alignment. So we stand against the oppression of American Zionist imperial war machine against Muslims of Iran. We must separate the people from their tyrant regime. The Iranian people did not deserve this attack.

The Gulf & Political Hypocrisy

As for Iran’s attacks on the Gulf states - Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait — the uncomfortable reality is they all host US military installations and bases. The United States has stated openly that these states have been providing substantial assistance to its military operations against Iran. None of these governments has condemned the attacks on Iran, expelled the forces operating from their territory, or severed the alliances enabling the aggression. Any of their public claim of neutrality is clearly disingenuous.

So we have to ask: Are they really victims or perpetrators supporting aggression against Muslims of Iran?

What Does Islam Actually Say?

So what does Islam require from us here? What does it say about Sunni Shia rift? Can these differences ever be resolved?

Firstly – Muslims are One Ummah distinct to all others.

Allah SWT states: “Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.”

https://legacy.quran.com/21/92

We are One Ummah distinct from all other people. Islam binds us, is our identity, is our bond. Islam doesn't recognise Shia Sunni schism or divides. Historically, as it is the case today – The Ummah must look beyond this division to rally together as an Ummah once again - against an external aggressor Crusader force – as it did in the past

Like Salahuddeen Ayubi [RA] rallied the warring factions of the Muslims along similar lines to what we see today.

Secondly - Ummah must be united politically under the Caliphate, with One Caliph.

The Quran and Sunnah demand Unity.

Allah SWT says: “Hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not be divided.”

https://legacy.quran.com/3/103

Real Unity doesn't come without political unity.

Like Salahuddeen Ayubi [RA] who rallied the Ummah under his single political leadership, away from the disparate Muslim political factions fighting each other.

This Ummah has to bin the nation state, nationalism and all the false borders created to divide this Ummah and unite under a single Caliphate which represents the true interests of the Islamic Ummah.

Third - Islam does not allow اختلاف Differences to override justice.

Allah SWT states: “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice…”

https://legacy.quran.com/4/135

Classical scholars were clear: Muslim lands must be defended from external aggression — regardless of internal shortcomings.

So the question is not: Do we agree with Iran?

The question is: Do we stand against ظلم oppression when we see it? Islam commands standing for justice and against oppression.

Conclusion

Despite all the valid criticisms of Iran — one point remains clear: In this situation, America and Zionists are the clear warring aggressors in this current war, lacking any credibility. This is yet another wake-up call for the Muslim Ummah. The human misery unfolding in Iran, Lebanon and occupied Palestine is unbearable to witness.

This is not just about Iran. This is about us — as an Ummah. The Muslim Ummah needs to come together and shed its historical fear mongering between Sunni and Shia. We have seen Muslim Ummah has much more to fear from Zionists and U.S. imperialism than from Shias.

3 Actions for us:

  1. As Muslims we must stand shoulder to shoulder with the Muslims of Iran – we are one Ummah

  2. Islam commands Muslims to stand for justice, truth and against oppression – So we must stand against American Zionist imperial war which is unjustifiable

  3. The political unity of the Muslim Ummah is the need of the hour under a single Caliph and a Khilafah state. We must call and work for this political unity.
